We did get out with it on Friday; to be honest, I'm not so far that impressed with it and even my wide angle shots seemed inferior (not as sharp) to what I usually get with my Canon 17-85mm lens, or even my G10 (same ratio). Richard's results were marginally better, but still nothing like he usually gets with his extremely steady hand, whether zoomed in or out. Having said that, we didn't detect it with our eyes, but what showed up in the photos is the typical June/July/August haze effect, so again, a polariser might have helped. This in itself, though, might have made focusing even worse!! It may be we have a rogue lens and may need to replace it with another for comparison, but the weather has been so unfavourable generally that time is racing along and is against our chances of returning the lens. I do know that some Sigma lenses are badduns, but if you get a good one, then it's usually exceptionally good, as is Richard's 17-70mm one.

You should set it up on a tripod in the house and do some test shots at all the apperture settings, focus on the edge of a window frame so the depth of field is more apparent.
I use a tripod 99% of the time as a matter of course and unless you have a seriously expensive monitor the only way to check sharpness properly is from a good quality print.

Richard will no doubt give it the tripod test. When we were out the other day, we didn't bother with one - in fact Richard didn't take any of his gear at all, just me. I don't have the strength or stamina to handle using a tripod unfortunately, so I do rely heavily on image stabilisation and, where possible, something to rest on (I used the fencing a lot the other day). R nearly always uses a tripod if he's doing serious photography.

Yes, you're right of course...
